On 23rd December, 1914, the 2nd Coldstream Guards of 4 Brigade, 2nd Division, left their billets in Bethune and marched to the trenches half a mile north-east of Festubert where they stayed until relieved on 2nd January, 1915. The battalion diary entry for 30th December, the day on which Patrick Cleary was killed, recorded that enemy shelling caused a few casualties. |
